4064 101413 gs4064Your decorating options are highly limited when living in a small space, especially if you are bound by strict landlord laws or rental rules. Thankfully, you can decorate a small room to look bigger by utilizing the space creatively. The tips presented here will hopefully help you create the kind of home you want to live in.

Proper Lighting

Lighting is the key element to make your room look bigger. If the room is too dark, it’ll look constricted. It's always a good idea to to allow as much natural lighting into the room as possible, so try not to block the windows. Decorate your house with small lamps where light is hard to reach. While artificial lighting is not as great as natural light, it does help.

Well Placed Mirrors

Mirrors are a crucial element of any house. They make the small space look larger than it actually is. Place the mirrors as near to the window as possible. This creates an illusion of depth, tricking your brain into thinking that you’re in a larger room. You can also attach mirrors on cabinet doors and glass tabletops. This makes the room feel uncluttered and much larger.

Wall Storage

One of the biggest problems in a small house is storage. There are only so many cupboards, suitcases and cardboard boxes you can keep inside the house. A creative solution to solve the storage issue is to use wall storage. Shelves are a great way to store things which you’ll be using frequently. That includes books, fashion accessories, stationery, medicine, and more.

Multifunction Furniture

Multifunction furniture is another great way to utilize the space in your house. Use a chest that can double up as a coffee table or a desk; a bed which can also act as storage, or a lounge. Folding tables and chairs are also recommended. It’s entirely up to you how you want to decorate the small space to make it more functional.

A clean space always functions better, and looks great as well. Call The Maids of West palm Beach when you need help getting your small house in order.

How to Make Clothes Last Longer without Expensive House Cleaning Products

Friday, 09 January 2015 15:08

110 1113tm vector2 997There is nothing worse than having to throw out your favorite pair of jeans or that comfortable top you love so much simply because they have been destroyed with use. Along with the miscellaneous stains, rips, and holes that happen over time, fading is another problem that most people would like to avoid.

The good news is that there are things you can do to make your clothes last longer; the best part is that you can do it without expensive house cleaning products. The Maids of West Palm Beach located in West Palm Beach, FL offers tips to keep your clothing in excellent condition while saving you money.

Rotate Your Outfits

One of the easiest ways to make your clothes last longer is to rotate your outfits as much as possible. Try not to wear the same outfit twice in one week to avoid extra wear-and-tear. It is wise to keep old clothing around to lounge in while you’re home so you can prolong the life of your daytime clothing.

Wash them Properly

If you really want to make your clothes last longer, it is important to wash them properly. Do not overuse dry cleaning services since they use harmful chemicals while charging you for it. You can steam your delicate clothing at home for a fraction of the cost with a steamer.

For normal clothing that can be washed in a machine, wash in cold water and be frugal with the detergent. Make sure to separate your loads properly; keep delicate garments in one load and jeans in another to avoid mixing rough denim with sensitive fabrics. Another trick to avoid fading is to turn your clothing inside out before washing.

Dry them Properly

Avoid using high heat whenever possible since it fades and shrinks fabrics. Line drying your clothes will not only keep them lasting longer, but the sun is also known to lighten and remove stains from clothing. When using a traditional dryer, use the lowest heat setting and cut the drying time down.

Store them Properly

Most people are unaware that proper storage is crucial when it comes to making your clothes last longer. For instance, it is recommended that you avoid wire hangers since they not only tend to stretch the shoulders of garments, but they are also slippery and leave most of your clothes lying on the floor.

Wood and velvet hangers are excellent options to consider when storing your clothing in a closet, especially for coats and suits. Make sure to keep important garments covered, dust free, and properly folded. Remember that not all garments are made the same and require different care; suits, for example, should be stored in a breathable canvas bag.

Following these simple tips will keep your clothes lasting longer without expensive house cleaning products.

Housekeeping Tip: Hand Washing Clothes is Not as Difficult as You May Think

Friday, 02 January 2015 15:05

ropa color 1113fg v 959Home washing machines have become as commonplace as the television; almost every home has one. When it comes to housekeeping, many people have long forgotten the old-fashioned ways of doing things—like how to hand wash their clothes.

There may come a day when your washing machine breaks down, or you may need to wash delicate clothing and don’t want to pay for dry cleaning services. Either way, it is a good idea to learn how to hand wash your clothing. The best part is that it’s probably not as difficult as you may think!

A few advantages of hand washing include:

Better for the Environment

Washing machines use quite a bit of energy, which in turn leads to increased environmental pollution. By hand washing your clothes, you are contributing to the global effort towards preserving our earth and reducing your carbon footprint.

Makes Your Clothes Last Longer

Hand washing is safer for many types of fabrics. Delicate clothing, such as sheer fabrics or undergarments, will definitely last longer if they are not thrown into the washing machine.

Even normal clothing will benefit from a hand wash; the machine accelerates fading and shape distortion. You will also be doing your garments a favor by avoiding the dryer. High heat can cause fading and shrinking, so it is recommended that you line dry whenever possible.

Simple Hand Washing Instructions

  1. Fill a laundry sink, bathtub, or bucket with cold water and add detergent. Liquid detergent works best since it mixes with the water right away. If you are using powdered detergent, make sure that it is fully dissolved in the water before adding any clothing.
  2. Separate the colors from the whites. This will protect your white clothing from color staining.
  3. Soak the clothes in detergent for half an hour. This is equivalent to the “pre-wash” setting on your washing machine. Soaking allows the dirt to separate and makes the clothes much easier to work with. (Note: If you are in a rush, you can skip this step and just start hand washing the clothing you need).
  4. Gently move the clothes around and make sure not to skip over any garments.
  5. Drain the water from the tub and refill it with cold water. At this point, you can add fabric softener, if desired.
  6. Again, gently move the clothes around and get as much soap out as possible.
  7. Drain the tub. Do not wring your clothing out. This is never recommended since it stretches and ruins garments. You can wrap the clothes in a towel and roll the towel until it is soaked and needs to be replaced. This will soak up most of the water.

Line dry your clothes until completely dry. At this point, you can also decide to throw your clothing into the dryer on a low setting.
