A clean home is a happy home, and we can all relate to the sheer joy of sitting down to relax in a sparkling and tidy living space. While dusting the shelves and vacuuming the carpets will undoubtedly put you on the right track, going the extra mile is what will truly take your property to the next level.

It’s easy to overlook the additional jobs, but getting them right will have an instrumental influence on the atmosphere of your property. Besides, it could help your family’s health in the process too. Focus on the seven elements below, and your home will be better than ever.

Wiping the ceiling fan

The Ceiling Fan

Like it or not, ceiling fans get dirty and dusty. A periodic clean will work wonders for the air quality, smell, and general appearance of the affected room. Here’s how:

Equipment Checklist:

  • Ladder
  • Pillowcase
  • Dusting Spray

Method:

  • Spray a healthy amount of dusting spray on the inside of your pillowcase.
  • Climb the ladder, with the pillowcase in hand.
  • Wrap the pillowcase around the blade, so that the blade assumes the role of the pillow.
  • Push the pillowcase tight so that it touches the blade, and slide the case away from the blade to bring the dirt, dust, and debris with the pillowcase.
  • Repeat the process on each blade of the ceiling fan to remove dirt while the spray helps to avoid accumulation.

Mattress or bed chemical cleaning with professionally extraction method. Hand in rubber protective glove holding nozzle of extractor. Upholstered furniture. Early spring or regular clean up.

Mattress Clean

The average mattress is used for eight hours per night, every single day for around eight years. While you cannot give it a traditional wash, there is a way to ensure it retains a pleasant smell.

Equipment Checklist:

  • Baking soda,
  • Essential oil,
  • Vacuum cleaner – using furniture attachment.

Method:

  • Remove all bedding
  • Create a homemade solution by combining a cup of baking soda and 5 drops of your chosen essential oil into a container. Shake well
  • Sprinkle the solution over the mattress and allow it to sit for two hours
  • Vacuum the baking soda up, bringing body oils with it, by using the furniture cleaning attachment. Repeat several times to gain the best results

Woman cleaning the bath tub

Bathtub / Shower

Removing soap scum from the bath or shower is one of those jobs where you could spend hours of scrubbing for little or no reward. Until now.

Equipment Checklist:

  • Spray bottle
  • White distilled vinegar
  • Dishwasher liquid

Method:

  • Start by measuring a mixture that will be two parts white vinegar to one part dishwasher liquid, but do not make the mixture just yet.
  • Heat the white vinegar in the microwave for a few seconds.
  • Add the vinegar and the dishwasher liquid to the spray bottle. Shake gently.
  • Spray the shower and bathtub, remembering that you don’t need to go overboard.
  • Leave it to sit for at least two hours, ensuring that the room is well ventilated due to the strong smell.
  • Return to wipe the solution away, taking the soap scum with it.

Woman Cleaning Dishwasher In Kitchen

Dishwasher

If the dishwasher isn’t clean, you cannot possibly expect the appliance to clean the dishes in an effective manner. Give it a periodic clean to ensure it runs perfectly for years to come.

Equipment Checklist:

  • Glass
  • White distilled vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Bleach (not stainless steel dishwashers)

Method:

  • Remove the bottom rack and clear the dishwasher of any gunk that has accumulated at the bottom of the dishwasher
  • Place a (dishwasher-safe) cup of white vinegar on the top shelf and remove all other dishes and items. Run a full cycle with the water set to the highest temperature
  • Sprinkle a cup of baking soda over the bottom of the dishwasher before running a shorter cycle on hot water
  • If your dishwasher isn’t made from stainless steel, add one cup of bleach to the bottom of the dishwasher and run a final cycle

Cleaning Kitchen Cabinet

Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets quickly grow grime and dirt on the doors, handles, and interiors. Fight fire with fire – or rather oil with oil – and this problem will soon be defeated.

Equipment Checklist:

  • Vegetable oil
  • Baking soda
  • Cloth
  • Toothbrush

Method:

  • Mix the two ingredients in a container, using two parts vegetable oil to one part baking soda
  • Use a cloth to wipe the mixture over the cupboards
  • Use a toothbrush to work the mixture into the hard to reach places
  • Wipe the cupboards clean using a damp cloth

Human Hand Putting Sliced Lemon In Bowl

The Microwave

The old method of using a heated up mixture of water and vinegar is outdated. However, that shouldn’t stop you from achieving a sparkling clean microwave oven.

Equipment Checklist:

  • Water
  • Sponge
  • Lemon essential oil
  • Spray bottle

Method:

  • Put a wet (not soaked) sponge in the microwave.
  • Fill the spray bottle with a little water and five drops of the lemon oil.
  • Spray the lemon water on the inside of the microwave, covering the top, bottom and sides as well as the inside of the window.
  • Run the microwave for two minutes. After a minute or two (once the sponge has cooled down) use the sponge to wipe away any grime for the surfaces.
  • Clean the microwave plate as usual.

Woman Cleaning Bathroom Tiles

Kitchen/Bathroom Items

A number of kitchen and bathroom items will start to look grubby if they aren’t properly treated, even if you do wipe them down on a regular basis. Here’s how you can bring them back to their sparkling best.

Equipment Checklist:

  • Baking soda
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Sponge

Method:

  • Mix ¼ cup of baking soda and a few spoonfuls of hydrogen peroxide until they form a paste.
  • Use a sponge (or similar product) to apply the mixture to cookie sheets, countertops, stoves, and other items that have accumulated stubborn stains and grime.
  • Leave the mixture to sit overnight.
  • When morning comes, use a damp sponge to wipe the dirt away. Use a paper towel to dry the affected areas.
